Powerful novel about Okonkwo, an Igbo clan leader who has risen to his position despite his deceased father's shameful legacy. While Okonkwo is successful, he grapples with his anger and to appear strong irregardless of the circumstance, to further distance himself of his father's reputation. The actions caused by his anger often overshadow his many achievements.

When Okonkwo is banished for 7 years for an accidental crime, he returns to a village in duress, as the heavy hand of British Colonialism and Christianity forces its influence over his people.
