A harrowing novel which begins in an Oakland kitchen, as two estranged siblings try to find common ground after their mother's death. Inside a refrigerator is a black cake--a decades old family recipe--and recordings of their mother, describing to her progeny a life they were completely unaware of.
I really enjoyed this one and, back when I read it, I had a bit of a hat trick of reading 3 winning novels in a row: Black Cake, Remarkably Bright Creatures, and Lessons in Chemistry.
