The Memory Police (Yoko Ogawa)

Frightening dystopian novel about an island where objects disappear and most residents are oblivious. However, the inhabitants who notice these things quickly become targets for the Memory Police, who surveil the island's residents with an iron fist.

It seems the only hope to keep the island's memory alive is a writer, who wants to protect her editor, who becomes Enemy #1 to the Memory Police.

This book was released in 1994 and feels incredibly prescient.
