Wonderful debut novel from Ishi Robinson!

A coming-of-age story set in Kingston, Jamaica, where we follow the life of determined teen, Pumkin Patterson.

When her grandma passes and her beloved Aunt Sophie leaves Jamaica for a job in France, Pumkin is left with a volatile domestic life consisting of her mother and the return of her mostly absentee father.

Motivated to escape her living situation and to study abroad and reunite with her aunt in France, Pumkin studies hard and pursues her love of baking to start her own business. If all goes accordingly, she can acquire the funds necessary to reunite with Sophie.

However, not everyone is thrilled by Pumkin's entrepreneurial efforts and the young teen will find herself yet again in challenging circumstances. Can she overcome them?
