Set in Monterrey, México, 17 year old Ulises and his friends are passionate about Kontra Cumbia, slowed-down Colombian cumbia music. They dance, sing, and style themselves uniquely, inspired by this music.
When a brush with the local cartel sends Ulises out of Mexico and into NYC, he feels isolated and homesick. He finds himself stagnant in the Land of Opportunity and fearing for his safety if he goes back home.
Beautiful film that switches back and forth from the past in Monterrey to the present in NYC.
The wonderful music reminded me of accordion music played in the Colombian film, The Wind Journeys. Highly recommend checking both of these films out!
